Alex Maclean
I chose this photo by photographer Alex MacLean, which was taken as an aerial shot above the beach. Th camera is angled straight down at the water and the kite surfer. The focal point is the red kite, which contrasts in color with the green-blue water. The line of the surf meeting the sand on the bottom of the photograph creates a strong horizontal line that parallels with the horizontal line created in the wake of the surfer, which draws the eye to the kite. This photo meets the rule of thirds with the white foam of the surf on either side of the clear green-blue water, creating three sections of the photo. I think the subject is very interesting with the irregular white foam on the waves, which creates some excitement that matches the excitement that I imagine kite surfing would have. I think this photo is successful because of the lines created by the beach and the surfer that lead to the kite, and the bright color of the kite which adds a pop of color to the photo.
