Self Portraits
For this assignment, we took self portraits using the timer mode on our cameras. My favorite picture that I took for this assignment was the one on the top right. I took it in my room at about 4 in the afternoon, when only a little bit of light was coming in from the window. By taking the picture with the light behind me I created a silhouette of myself. I really liked the minimal lighting in this photo, how there's just enough to see some of the details of my shirt and my necklace but my face is in shadow. The darkness of my silhouette against the window creates a lot of interesting positive and negative space in the photo. I also liked how the sheer blue curtains added a bluish tint to the photo. The picture on the bottom left was created in the same manner but I used Photoshop to make it black and white. The only thing I would change about the pictures would be the slight angle that each one is tilted at; you can see especially with the lines of the window that it's a bit askew. This was mostly due to the fact that I had a large pile of books to get my camera to the right height, since I didn't have a tripod at home. Aside from that I think they're mostly successful in composition and creating an interesting sense of mood.
