Studio Portraits
For this assignment we used studio lighting to take portraits of classmates. My favorite portrait is the bottom middle photo. The lighting in this photo is very bright and close and coming from the left. It illuminates her face and hands on the left and leaves part f her right hand and the right side of her face somewhat in shadow. The model is sated facing the camera holding a glass bottle filled with water. The sides of the bottle reflect her left eye several times, making it seem like she has multiple eyes. The photo was taken vertically to fill the frame with almost the whole length of the bottle. I felt this captured the dynamic aspects of the bottle and the interesting reflection effects it created. To me, the multiple eyes in this photograph represent the multiple ways a person can be viewed, straight on or through a distorted lens. Sometimes we can show lots of "faces" but our true selves may be hidden in the shadows.
This photograph contrasts significantly with the photo on the bottom left. That photo has the same model, but the lighting is coming from the right and the photo was taken from above looking down onto the model, who is looking at a map. The lighting and angle is different but the sense of mood and mystery created by the shadows is similar for each photo.
